Introduction to the discussion
With the globalization of the industrial economy, Japanese business’s advancement into Asian countries such as China, Europe, and the United States is thriving. As a result, the number of Japanese employees posted overseas and their families has been increasing.
In foreign countries, life changes completely depending on whether or not you can communicate in foreign languages. If you can speak a language, you will be able to make friends and friends of local people, and you will be able to easily integrate into society and the community. In other words, it becomes easier to be acclimated to the country.
There are some local people who express their uncomfortable feelings in words and attitudes because we do not speak the local language, so communication by language is very important to make a living locally.
Finding the problem
Then, what is the proper use of English, Japanese, and local languages in non-English speaking countries by overseas Japanese?
As an example, in Dusseldorf, Germany, Japanese employees mainly use English and Japanese both inside offices and outside offices. The reason is that communication in English is necessary for the offices in Dusseldorf because colleagues and business customers are all Europeans. Moreover, outside the office, due to the characteristics of the region that has many Japanese-affiliated companies, there are many situations where communication in Japanese is sufficient.
On the other hand, in Shanghai, China, Japanese employees mainly use Japanese and Chinese both inside offices and outside offices. It is speculated that Chinese staff working in Japanese companies and local service staff have high Japanese language skills.
Therefore, I would like to study how foreigners living in Japan can use English, Japanese, and their native language properly.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Isao Yanagimachi, who is researching language education and language usage, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Policy Management is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
