- Professor Kan Suzuki
Introduction to the discussion
In recent years, there has been a lot of discussion about the reform of teacher training.
The reason for this is the expansion of educational problems due to dramatic changes in the social situation surrounding the inside and outside the educational world.
The burden on teachers is steadily increasing, such as the increase in foreign children, the emergence of ICT early education, the advancement of foreign language instruction, and club activities after school.
It is said that what students should do is to study, but there are still many students and parents who rely on cram schools to study guides.
Finding the problem
Then, what is the role of school today and what is necessary or insufficient for the current teachers?
Recently, the issues that teachers have to tackle have become more complicated and diversified, such as dealing with bullying, school refusal and developmental disorder, support for parents who do not speak Japanese as a mother tongue and their children, and support for poor families.
We should recognize that there are various roles outside the class as well as making good lesson plans.
Japan is known to have an overwhelming short training period compared to other foreign countries, but it is difficult to extend training hours significantly during the undergraduate period.
I am wondering if we should follow the successful examples of graduate-level teacher training systems that are found in Finland, Western countries, and East Asian countries.
In order to meet the current social needs, I would like to construct an ideal teacher training program from a completely different perspective and prepare a draft version of a teacher training system reform program, while referring to successful cases in other countries.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Kan Suzuki, who has experience as assistant minister of the MEXT and has been doing a lot of research on education policy, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Policy Management is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
