Introduction of the discussion
Public choice theory is an area of the academic field that serves as a bridge between political science and economics, which solves political processes under democracy and bureaucracy using a microeconomic approach.
It is characterized by seeing politicians and bureaucrats as players who act strategically for their own benefit and by analyzing their strategic dependence under social and political systems.
From the latter half of the 1980s, the introduction of a new analysis method such as non-cooperative game theory produced remarkable academic results and demonstrated a certain level of explanatory power in actual policy formation.
Against this background, today, a series of these studies are often called “new political economics”.
Finding the problem
Then, is it possible to analyze the economy of the 21st century by public choice theory?
The development of IT since the 21st century has made it more thorough to pursue the personal interests of each person and organization, and as a result, it has sharpened the traditional “rare resource allocation” problem.
In addition, the knowledge of game theory is indispensable for analyzing the strategic behavior that arises from this situation.
In the 21st century, we continue to live in a society consisting of the pursuit of private interests, in which public choice theory identifies social preferences that are aggregated through democratic processes. It is possible to evaluate the current state of society in light of preferences and to propose changes in the social system if necessary.
Therefore, I would like to study the future economic policy from the viewpoint of security.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Taro Ozawa, who specializes in public choice and game theory, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Policy Management is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
