Introduction to the discussion
People who develop a mental illness due to strong work-related stress and are certified as work-related accidents have been on the increase, and preventing mental health problems in the workplace has become an increasingly important issue.
In accordance with the newly revised law to the Industrial Safety and Health, a new stress check system has been introduced, which includes examinations to understand the degree of psychological burden and interview guidance based on the results.
The goal of the stress check system helps prevent mental health problems by grasping the degree of stress at the workplace, encouraging people to become aware of their own stress, as well as improving the workplace and creating a comfortable workplace.
Finding the problem
From what I have read and learned, it seems that if a mental health disorder develops to a certain extent, it will be irreversible and will not be restored eventually.
I am wondering where is the point of no return regarding mental health problems.
And I am wondering whether the mental health checklist is effective for improving the work environment or not.
Prof. Akihito Shimazu, Faculty of Policy Management, is currently developing a mental health action checklist (MHACL) to improve the workplace environment.
This study has been conducted by a working group consisting of specialists in occupational mental health, psychology, occupational physiology, ergonomics, and occupational health practitioners to reduce occupational stress.
The effectiveness as a tool for proposing workplace environment improvement measures as a result of practice is being confirmed.
Learning MHACL is the first priority.
Eventually, I want to grasp its effectiveness and make an extended version to improve performance.
Examining the conclusion
By studying with Professor Akihito Shimazu, who is involved in research and development of MHACL and has a wealth of research results on mental health in the workplace, and by touching research in a wide range of fields, I am sure that I could obtain various perspectives regarding my research and it would open up new horizons for me.
Therefore, I believe that Keio University’s Faculty of Policy Management is the most suitable place for pursuing my research and social contributions, and I am aspiring to enter your school and study in your laboratory.
