早稲田大学 国際教養学部 AO入試 志望理由書 提出例(生井 健一 教授参考)

Dear Admission Office,

First of all I would like to thank for the opportunity, and in this letter please allow me to explain my interest in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in International Culture and Language Studies later in my academic years. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an admission. During the in-person interview, I would also be delighted to expand more on my area of studies and what I can achieve with liberal studies curriculum and study abroad program.

English is one language to learn, but everyone must wonder, why is it so difficult for us to study English when we speak a much more complex language like Japanese which derived from Chinese utilizing thousands of letters, characters and even tones. In my research of finding out how Japanese kanji is taught in many schools abroad, there were many interesting facts that gave me an idea. There are two mainstream methods when it comes to teaching the kanji letters, “Frequency-Based Approach” and “Element-Based Approach”. Definitions as follows; 1) Frequency meaning the order in which the kanji appears in textbooks or kanji workbooks when chosen based on the kanji’s perceived fundamental importance in society or textbooks 2) Element meaning the building blocks of kanji covering the simplest kanjis representing basic elements. Under such an approach, all of the parts of a kanji are identified and assigned a meaning. The biggest advantage of using an “element-based approach” as opposed to a “frequency-based approach” is that, the students can avoid the overwhelming feeling of being confronted by many unfamiliar structures all at once and trying to memorize without understanding what constitutes kanjis.

This learning can be applied when learning English or any other languages as well, there is no single formula that works, but the point is, to find out the core structure of the respective language and master it fast. English also derives from a Latin language, so after mastering alphabets, it’s smart to study the Latin elements to make the vocabulary memorization systematic and effective.

Every year we encounter textbooks and audiobooks trying to appeal to the mass with faulty stories. I feel passionate about gaining practical knowledge based on data in international culture and language studies so I would be able to work in global workplace and potentially influence a learning program. And in order for me to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, and locate professional opportunity, it is extremely important for me to study various international studies among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered. Thank you very much for reading and I am very much looking forward to hearing good news.
