早稲田大学 国際教養学部 AO入試 志望理由書 提出例(ピニングトン エイドリアン 教授参考)

Dear Admission Office,

To begin with, I would like to thank for the opportunity and in this letter I will do my best to explain my interest in applying for School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, hoping to pursue a major in International Cultures and Japanese Literature Studies later in my academic years. I would be more than grateful if you could kindly give it a read and grant me an admission. During the in-person interview, I would also be delighted to expand more on my area of studies and what I wish to achieve with liberal studies curriculum including study abroad program.

Within Japanese intellectual history, the relationship between various visions of “modernity” and its own ambiguous relationships with concepts of “East” and “West” is truly intriguing.   Thematic modules included Pan-Asianism, prewar Marxism, the Kyoto School, postwar subjectivity, ethnicity in the New Left, New Academicism and postmodernity, and finally Heisei nationalism. Starting from Kojiki in the 5th century when writing was first introduced to Japan from China, to Tokugawa, Meiji to Post-war period, Japanese literature developed nurturing romanticism and realism as well as modernism between the East and West identity. And many writers such as Kawabata Yasunari won the nobel prize. The famous Haruki Murakami says he is an outcast of Japanese literature world, but what is the history of modern Japanese literature and intellectuality?

Another perspective, Japanese literature can be difficult to read and understand, because in many ways the written Japanese reflects certain peculiarities of the spoken language. Statements are often ambiguous, omitting as unnecessary the particles of speech which would normally identify words as the subject or object of a sentence, or using colloquial verb forms from a specific region or social class. Special language used to depict gender, age, social status, or regional origins is often the only clue as to who is speaking or being spoken about in a sentence. In many cases the significance of a simple sentence can only be understood by someone who is familiar with the cultural or historical background of the work. Japan’s deliberate isolation during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries created a strong cultural homogeneity, and the literature of that period incorporated many common understandings that are unintelligible to someone who does not share the same background.

Due to above reasons, studying Japanese literature is a complex work, involving high intelligence in the language itself as well as cultural elite history. With tremendous achievement of modern Japanese writers, I feel the strong need to understand and study international culture, language and translation studies to unlock different pockets of education that would help us find an area in which we can locate a job opportunity. And in order for me to attain high-level education and equip myself with what is needed to survive the next decades of globalization and competition, it is extremely important for me to take part in the study abroad program that would allow me to transfer to a school progressive in the field. Very excited to learn and study among like-minded students at Waseda where liberal studies is offered. Thank you very much for reading and I am very much looking forward to hearing good news.
